Filmfest Dresden Sommernacht in Berlin 2008

    By Ron Holloway | August 11, 2008

Robin Malick, director of the Dresden International Short Film Festival, is always on the lookout for more film friends in Berlin. Last April 1st, he presented a preview of the 20th Filmfest Dresden (15-20 April 2008) in the Vertretung des Freistaates Sachsen in Berlin-Mitte. Then, on April 26, he returned to Berlin to present a roundup of awarded festival hits at Babylon Kino. Now, for his third visit to Berlin on July 31, Robin teamed with Simon Chappuzeau and Mark Müller at their Home Base Lounge for a Summer Night in Berlin on the banks of the Spree.

First, there was a convivial Happy Hour (salad, grill, beer) at Bar 25 (Holzmarktstrasse 25, near Ostbahnhof) in the company of friends of the short film: Heinz Herrmanns of the Interfilm Short Film Festival in Berlin, Helmut Morsbach of the DEFA Stiftung, Martin Blaney of Screen International, and sundry representatives of embassies with addresses in Berlin. Altogether, nine shorts were presented by Robin Malick at Home Base.

The opening film was sheer delight: Ismet Ergün’s Ich bin dran (Now’s My Turn) (Germany). The scene is a playground in an Istanbul neighborhood. Each afternoon, a half dozen boys meet with change in their pockets to buy one ticket at a movie theater. Lots are drawn to see who will be the winner. Later that afternoon, the lucky winner returns to the playground to tell the story of the film he has just seen – to the delight of the others. Among the crowd is a little girl, the sister of one of the boys, who bends an ear from a nearby bench. One day, she’s let in on the fun. – Ron & Dorothea Holloway
