Z IS FOR ZAGREB by Ronald Holloway
A guide to the films of one of the world’ s major cartoon studios.
Tantivy Barnes. Printed in England. Rear Cover: ERSATZ
One of the delights of the past fifteen years as far as filmgoers are concerned has been the rise of the Zagreb cartoon studio in Yugoslavia. Their short, terse, and irrepressibly witty films are the ideal overture to any cinema or club programme. The gags are timeless, the drawing inspired, and the language barrier is hurdled with the greatest of ease by an almost purely visual means of communication. It seemed a just reward when, in 1962, the Zagreb production ERSATZ / SUBSTITUTE became the first cartoon from outside the U. S. to win an Academy Award for animation. Ronald Holloway has compiled this attractive, illustrated guide to the Zagreb output with love and perception. He traces the growth of the studio, covers the career of each major artist involved, and offers capsule comments on all the films. He has also gathered together a brilliant selection of pictures that emphasise the remarkable imagination and draughtsmanship of the Zagreb team.
