    Die Konsequenz von Wolfgang Petersen

    By Dorothea Holloway | April 5, 2014

Am 10. März 2014 zeigte der NDR das Gesellschaftsdrama Die Konsequenz (1977) von Wolfgang Petersen, ein ganz grandioser Film.

In Autumn 1983 Ron Holloway wrote in KINO – German Film No:12:

Wolfgang Petersen was the first of the New German Cinema directors to point the way to commercial films with a polished artistic touch – the phenomenal success of his Das Boot (The Boat) (1981) spurred many critics to cite him as the first and foremost of the New Generation directors departing from the straight-jacket of the “Autorenfilm”.

Based on Alexander Ziegler’s novel (who wrote the screenplay), this is the story of a tenuous homosexual relationship between two men – althought it is justified to summarize the whole as a love story that simply refuses to pull any of its punches. The older man in the relationship is a sensitive stage-actor with a deep concern for the problems the relationship causes in an intolerant community; the younger is faced with a prison-term for his inability to cope with life as a whole – the consequence of which is a threat of suicide. A strong film, The Consequence enjoyed broad international acclaim and commercial release at home and abroad.

Highly recommended: Interview Ron Holloway with Wolfgang Petersen in KINO – German Film No:14 (1984) and in KINO – German Film No: 15 (1984) Die unendliche Geschichte(Neverending Story).
