Volker Hassemer on Dieter Kosslick and Berlinale 2008
By Ron Holloway | August 21, 2008
Under Dieter Kosslick Berlin and Berlinale become ever more similar: Dieter Kosslick copied the youth of Berlin, and the Talent Campus was launched. And for Berlin the Talent Campus became one of its grand youth projects. Already, at the very beginning, the Berliners had elevated the Berlinale to a great festival for the public. And ever more the Berlinale prepares Berliners to kickoff each year with a great folk festival.
The Berlinale can even rely on guests in cold February. For they would visit Berlin even if there wasn’t a film festival. That’s why the Berlinale is attractive even in the worst season of the year. Berlin is a music metropole. So this year Dieter Kosslick revamped the Berlinale as a film festival of music stars. For stars in any case like to come to Berlin. All the more because here’s a festival called the Berlinale.
Also, the jury decisions smack of Berlin. And Berlin savors the jury decisions. Berlin and Berlinale are like twins from the same egg. Whoever wants to find out something about the Berlinale, he or she should take a look at Berlin. Whoever wants to experience Berlin, he or she should consider the Berlinale. It’s a symbiosis: Berlin needs only too well the Berlinale. And the Berlinale and its stars just as well needs Berlin and Berliner. And this time even the weather played along.
We’ll see what the 2009 Berlinale brings. For here, too, the Berlinale is like Berlin: you have to attune yourself for surprises.
