    Filmfest Dresden Preview in Berlin
Thanks again to Filmfest Dresden director Robin Malick, Berliners were treated on 1 April 2008 to a preview to the 20th Dresden International Short Film Festival (15-20 April 2008) in the Vertretung des Freistaates Sachsen in Berlin-Mitte, a welcomed opportunity for cineastes and public alike to preview some of the key attractions at the upcoming festival.

Later, when the Filmfest Dresden actually rolled around, 285 shorts were screened in the Metropolis venue, of which 69 competed in the international and national competition for the Golden Knight Awards. In addition, another 216 shorts were screened in the sidebar programs. Following the Filmfest Dresden event – heralded for its generous purse awards – Robin Malick returned to Berlin on April 26 for a roundup of festival hits at the Babylon Kino.

In the International Competition the Golden Knight for Best Animation Film went to Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s Madame Titli-Putli (Canada, 2007), a stunning stop-motion film about an elderly lady boarding a night train with all her earthly possessions along with the ghosts of her past. The Golden Knight for Best Short Fiction Film was awarded to Adrian Sitaru’s Valuri (Waves) (Romania, 2007), a poignant tory set on the Black Sea coast about a woman tourist who leaves her son in the care of a gypsy while she flirts in the waves with a lothario.

In the National Competition the Golden Knight for Best Animation Film went to Florian Grolig’s Weiss (White) (Germany, 2007), a fascinating graphic line play against a white background. The Golden Knight for Best Short Fiction Film went to Hanno Olderdissen’s Robin (Germany, 2008), an eerie tale about an 8-year-old boy shielding his newly born sister from unfortunate family harm.
